Description
This hovercraft has been especially designed for commuter passenger ferry operations on short routes on inland or coastal protected waters with a maximum capacity of 25 passenger seats. The AHS-12/TF hovercraft is based on a very simple design using gasoline engines, so that payload and speed are maximized in relation to its acquisition cost and the cost per passenger ratio has a very competitive value. This design has been derived from a well-proven smaller hovercraft using practically the main concepts throughout at a scale of 1.6:1. The most remarkable feature of this hovercraft is its compact design. With a relatively small beam and the high freeboard of its hull, it is quite different from other typical hovercraft designs with broad and flat side platforms. Thanks to its exclusive lift system, which offers very high stability and hence a high air cushion height to beam ratio, this hovercraft stays operational in weather conditions of waves and wind that are well beyond the limits of other hovercraft. This way cancellation rates due to weather conditions can be kept at a very low value for this size of hovercraft. This very high stability also means increased safety in difficult conditions. Furthermore, the rounded bottom hull forms offer very high structural efficiency and its high freeboard provides a high level of buoyancy. In the standard version, power is provided by two gasoline engines with a total maximum combined power of 670 HP. With that power, this hovercraft can reach a maximum speed of over 45 knots or a cruise speed of around 35 knots over calm water. Total length is about 12 meters (40 ft) and total load carrying capacity (including fuel) is 2,500 Kg (5,500 lbs). This load is equivalent, for instance, to 25 passengers at 75 Kg (165 lbs) each, a crew of two, 350 litres of fuel and 260 Kg of luggage or catering. With this fuel load, the endurance is about 5 hours and the range is over 150 nautical miles (280 Km) at cruise speed.
The main deck houses the passenger cabin, which occupies the central and forward areas of this deck, as well as the propulsion and lift machinery compartment, which is located aft. This cabin can easily hold up to 25 seats, with two seats for the commander and one assistant at the front. The passenger seats are arranged with a longitudinal pitch of 80 cm (31.5 in). The seating layout has one row of seats at either side near the windows and another 3-seat row at the centre of the cabin, separated by two aisles 35 cm (14 in) wide. Headroom in the main cabin is 1.96 m (6 ft 5 in). Access is through two gull-wing doors at their aft ends, one on each side of the craft. The passenger cabin is very wide in comparison to other hovercraft of similar sizes. Thus, inner width is 3.68 m (12 ft) in comparison to the 1.90 m (6.2 ft) of other hovercraft with flat side platforms. The amplitude of this cabin offers a great versatility to install very different layouts for different applications. Total inner cabin length, including the control station, is 5.62 m (18 ft 5 in). The control station is at the front end of the main cabin. The standard layout has two adjustable seats for the captain and the second officer or navigator. In front of these seats is the control panel, with the instruments, the rudder wheel and the control levers.
Finally, the installed machinery is of high efficiency and reliability. Propulsion is obtained though a reliable GM 530 HP marine gasoline engine, while thrust power is delivered by another GM engine, a modern, low fuel consumption, low maintenance ECOTEC 140 HP engine. The lift fans are of strong industrial design with hollow aerodynamic profile blades, which offer high efficiency and low noise levels. The ducted air propellers are of aeronautical quality and offer high performance with low noise.
The marine concepts that have been applied in the design of this hovercraft have led to a very strong and stable craft with a high standard of safety and reliability in all operating conditions. Her high speed, her amphibious qualities and her capability to operate in very adverse weather conditions in regard to her size make this hovercraft a very cost-effective and efficient means for amphibious and high speed passenger transport operations for short range routes in inland or protected coastal waters.
