“Elusive” like many West Coast flyers was commissioned in Santa Cruz, California and built by Terry Alsberg of Alsberg Brothers. Designer Carl Schumacher set the criteria for this 37 from the beginning to be an off-the-wind racer that was big and tough enough to stand up to the rigors of long-distance offshore competition. In late 1984, the first Express 37’s finished first, second and third in the 1985 Transpac Race. And, Elusive is still fast.
In all, 65 37’s were built and for the most part they were concentrated in San Francisco Bay, Southern California and Long Island Sound. Elusive is hull number 48 and is a tried and true performance cruiser.
In profile the vessels sheer is almost straight, but there is a nice entry angle to the bow. Weight is centered in the middle of the boat to keep the ends light. The broad stern features a reverse transom with two ventilating windows that seemingly “wink” as she rolls past other boats. The low-slung cabin trunk is short and concentrated amidships. A careful inspection of the underbody lines reveals flat, flared sections forward and this no doubt helps the 37 surf on even modest waves. The keel is a narrow-cord foil that is slightly raked aft. The upgraded elliptical carbon fiber rudder is placed well aft, again to facilitate getting up on top of the water.
Elusive‘s double-spreader rig is moderate in proportion and the sail plan includes a large, relatively low-aspect main and smaller high-aspect headsail. There are two running backstays to assist rig stabilization and pointing to windward.
All Expresses’ were hand-laid, vacuum-bagged balsa-cored and Alsberg was one of the first builders to use vinylester resin in the outer layers to prevent blisters. The deck is also balsa-cored and joined to the hull on a typical inward flange and bonded with 3M 5200 and stainless screws. Molded liners are used throughout the boat, including separate pans for the head, galley and other furnishings. There are structural floors that provide excellent athwart ship support. Indeed, the 37's hull is known for being virtually bulletproof.
On deck all mast and sail control lines are led aft to the cockpit and can be controlled from a position standing in the companionway. The cockpit is set up for efficient sail trimming with the mainsheet traveler on a bridge just aft of the companionway, the primary sheet winches are outboard, and the tiller well aft.
Down below the Express 37 is functional and reasonably comfortable. The interior finish includes a teak-and-holly sole and a smattering of ash and oak trim, teak ceiling strips and large expanses of molded fiberglass. The arrangement is straightforward, with a V-berth or sail storage in the bow. An enclosed head is next and the saloon includes a bulkhead-mounted table and opposing settees. Water and fuel tanks take up the space below the settees, although there are overhead lockers along the hull sides. The galley lines up to starboard with a propane fired oven, stovetop and icebox (the chiller is not operational). The sink is mounted amid ship, behind the companionway steps and drains on either tack. The nav station is opposite the galley and includes a large chart table and fixed seat. The aft end of the boat is completely open, with quarter berths to port and starboard. This layout leaves one with an expansive feel for a boat of this size.
Elusive offers exhilarating performance both on and off the racecourse. She has a lot of speed left in her. This Express 37 is a terrific value.

Starting at the bow you have a double v-berth just aft is your enclosed head. Entering the main cabin there are settee/bunks port and starboard. On the bulkhead is a fold down table. Aft again and to starboard there is a two burner stove/oven and ice box and shelf storage. The sink is located amid ships over the engine box. Under the cockpit are two quarter berths that merge into a double.
