This is one absolute classic beauty. This double - ender has been owned for the last thirty years by a shipwright that has taken infinite care of her. The concept of the Union 36 goes back to the early 1970's when Hans Cristian Yachts founder commissioned Robert Perry to build a 34 foot vessel to be built in Taiwan at the Union Ship Co. in Taipei. Soon the boat was on the market in the United States as a Hans Christian 34'.
Before the first Hans Christian 34 wet its hull, Edwards stretched the mold adding area fore and aft of the cockpit making the new mold 36'.
Originally the agreement was that Hans Christian owned the design and distribution, but Edwards had a falling out with Union Ship Company and it was found out they owned the design and molds and would continue to build the vessel and market it as a Union 36.
The boat displaces 22,000 lbs and the hull is heavily constructed. Some say the boat is over - built but the thick, hand laden, with the deck built from 3/8" fiberglass, 3/4" plywood, and an added 3/8" glass layer.
The boats is accented all over with traditional silicaon bronze hardware, along with wooden blocks, and presents an old style classic aesthetic seldom seen in today's world of aluminum dressed boats. No, it's no shiny but the top of the line bronze is superior on so many levels to stainless and aluminum.
The original teak decks have been removed by the owner, who has owned the boat over 30 years, and is a professional shipwright, so you know it was done correctly.
She is a heavy boat and it takes roughly 15 knots of wind to move her at hull speed but once she is rolling, she cruises extremely well. In a decent wind she handles beautifully, and points very well. She will take you anywhere, handling well and responds to the steepest of waves and stays relatively dry.
In light winds though, you can always fall back to the "iron ginny", a Perkins 4 -108 that has been well maintained and pushes the boat pretty close to effortlessly.
The barn door rudder is mounted on two heavy, bronze gudgeons, and a keel - supported shoe. The rudder provides very good control and reasonable response even though there is a full keel.
There is plenty of headroom and ventilation. There is storage at every turn and the boat is very comfortable for long passages, which the boat was built for.
In the salon there is a U - shaped dinette to port (more storage beneath the seats) and to starboard there is a nice large settee, that also functions as a sea berth. There's also a nice pilot berth.
The U shaped galley is located to port and contains a deep double sink, and a three burner CNG stove, with a 12 cubic foot refrigerator below.
This boat is hungry for the open sea and is built to ride blue water. If you want to travel this boat will suit you fine. Come see her and you will love her, so bring your check book!
