We believe the following to be some compelling reasons you should, as a buyer consider when deciding on your next Yacht.
· There is no doubt that a Nautor's Swan, irrespective of age or size represents a significant investment and you may be asking why should you decide that a Nautor’s Swan is the right boat for you.
· Here are some important reasons why you should seriously consider purchasing a Nautor’s Swan sailing yacht.
· Build quality – this is not an easily quantifiable reason until you start to get under the skin of a Swan. Finland, as country, has a reputation for building very strong and over engineered ships and yachts. Nautor have been building Swans since 1968 and a lot of building practices decided upon then still remain today.
· The quality of the moulding. Most people would admit that the finish on a Nautor hull is possibly the finest in the world. The older boats have extremely heavy lay-ups – another reason for their longevity.
· Design – whether you are looking at Sparkman and Stephens, Ron Holland or the current incumbent, German Frers you know you are getting a boat that will look after you even in the most demanding of conditions.
· Lead keel with Antimony (to increase structural rigidity) and stainless steel keel bolts through bolted to heavy GRP fixing points via (a normally galvanised) steel interior load structure.
· Mast – keel stepped for extra support and better load distribution throughout the vessels structure.
· Mast step is normally adjustable and is part of the immensely strong interior composite load structure within the vessel.
· Engine is mounted on very substantial engine beds with steel inserts and some models have lead sound deadening.
· Engine insulation – all models have a dedicated insulated engine space. Later models are built to Solas B-15 requirement. Generally excellent access from front, sides and back including stern gear.
· The domestic voltage system is extremely well engineered with much larger domestic battery capacity compared with similar yachts in class.
· Woodwork is purpose built at the factory for each boat in Nautor “blond” teak. Where lamination is required then this is also carried out in house. All joinery work is undertaken to “best yacht practice” Interior topsides are lined with teak battens and the teak and holly floor is laid on an Aluminium sub structure.
· Rudders are generally constructed in the factory and benefit from the engineering employed elsewhere in the boat. Whether skeg hung or semi and balanced rudders they are moulded in GRP with stainless inserts. Later models have Carbon (Swan 45, 601 and 82).
· Steering gear on the older boats was also built in house. Very well engineered with a high safety factor built in.
· Stern gear is either a standard shaft arrangement with stern tube and cutlass bearing with a shear pin fitted for safety with some models fitted with shaft brakes. Performance also enhanced with normally two or three bladed max prop propellers or similar. Later boats are fitted with sail drives to enhance sailing performance and increase motoring efficiency – up 22% in some cases.
· Stability is generally seen as excellent on all models even those models designed around the era of IOR. The original Swan 36 had a ballast ratio of 51% with 44% on the classic Swan 65. With generally deeper keels that the competition, superb upwind performance is not compromised by shallower “stub keels” although some models are available with centreboards and shallower drafts.
· Performance is always at the top of Nautor’s mind whether they are building a Racer Cruiser, Cruiser Racer or simply a cruising orientated Swan. They are designed for the yachtsman who loves sailing, is interested in getting the most out of their yacht and arriving in Port with one of the finest looking yachts in the harbour.
· Deck fittings are of the highest quality and designed to allow ease of use even in difficult conditions. As cruising yachts, most models can be easily sailed short handed providing a fast, comfortable and safe environment for longer distance cruising.
· Anodising – as with all things “Nautor”, double anodising with special attention to the best possible finish to withstand this harsh environment are key areas that Nautor work hard to attain.
· Resale values – sailing boats generally have an excellent reputation for holding and sometimes increasing in value. There are no guarantees these days but if you are looking for something that will hold onto it’s residual then historically, a Swan is a good investment. When the Swan 38 was first launched, she cost the princely sum of £20,000 in 1974. Today they are fetching over £90,000 for a good example.
· Buying a sailing yacht is all about choice. The word compromise is often used within the sailing world and there is no doubt that buyers have a lot to choose from these days. As one Swan owner was heard to say, “"You can sail into a Mediterranean port full of three-tiered lavish motor yachts, but the Swan 65 still has the looks to turn heads”. This is true today as it was back then.
